Seeing an overwhelming need to address negative sexual images, sexually abusive relationships, and the secrecy and shame surrounding sexual violence, DeShannon Bowens founded ILERA to educate, empower, and heal. She currently serves as ILERA's Lead Therapist and Trainer. DeShannon believes sexuality is sacred and the violence in our communities is contrary to that energy.

The prevalence of sexual abuse, particularly incest, disturbed her a great deal after reading the acclaimed book PUSH, by Sapphire. Soon afterwards, DeShannon began her study of sexual abuse and the symptoms many women experience after being traumatized as she completed her BA in psychology from the University of Missouri – St. Louis .

She began a career in mental health research working on national and state funded studies, examining HIV risk, cultural competency in mental health systems and resiliency among youth living in group homes. Feeling the need to further develop her skills, DeShannon moved to New York and completed a MS degree in counseling from Pace University . She continued her work in research, serving as Director of Operations of a national research study on homelessness for 3 years. Simultaneously, she began volunteer work and became a certified rape crisis counselor in New York State .

DeShannon led her first candle light vigil for sexual assault survivors in Congers, NY for Rockland Family Shelter in April 2006. The moving experience resulted in DeShannon being featured in the Lower Hudson Valley Journal newspaper and the Rockland County 's Channel 12 local news.

In an effort to take her message to the airwaves, DeShannon has co-produced and hosted three talk shows on WBAI 99.5 FM Peace and Justice Radio in New York City as part of the semi-annual Hip Hop Takeover Marathon. Her shows focused on the intersection of hip hop culture and sexuality.

DeShannon's consulting services, radio programs and book, Hush Hush , all encompass her mission to help individuals, families, communities and organizations heal from the misconception and repression of sexuality that leads to sexual abuse and trauma. She's committed to leaving a legacy of compassion, truth and empowerment that enriches and betters the lives of people generation after generation to come.
